Welcome,

I’m Devon Roulston, an artist, musician and woodworker based out of London, ON, Canada. For several years now, I have been fascinated by the philosophical work of visionaries such as Carl Jung, and consequently, many of my paintings are heavily influenced by philosophical and psychological concepts. More specifically, I look inward at what I’m currently experiencing or struggling with, and I let those thoughts and feelings express themselves through my work. It could be joy; it could be pain. These paintings are my meditations, my therapy. I am also inspired by nature, both macro and micro, and by artists such as Hilma af Klint, Wassily Kandinsky, Emily Carr, Anna Yuschuk, Rudolf Bikkers, Scott Fillier and many others. Each of these inspirations have provided a concept or stepping-stone that I have built on as I’ve developed my own unique vision. The foundational concepts of light and dark and the presence or absence of colour play an important role in how I approach my paintings. Whether it’s a landscape depiction, representational work or pure abstraction, the overall mood and feeling of the piece is fundamental.

Since childhood, I have constantly been involved in creative endeavours such as painting, drawing, building, sewing, and making music. My formal education consisted of a Bachelor in Percussion Performance from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2015, but I also studied acrylic painting with Newfoundland artist, Scott Fillier in 2004, and wood engraving and printmaking with Gerard Brender à Brandis in 2006.  More recently, I approached Anna Yuschuk to mentor me as I look to learn more about the art world and discover my own artistic possibilities.  I truly believe that art has the ability to deeply impact people’s lives in meaningful ways and has the power to bring about positive change for myself and my community.
